General Therapy

You know it’s time to talk to someone, and maybe that’s all you know. General Therapy is for folks who want a more free-flowing approach to psychotherapy. It’s about creating time to slow down and reflect on your life. You don’t have to know what to talk about; simply show up, and let the conversation flow.

What This Looks Like

What sessions feel like

We’ll reflect on what you’ve been sitting with during the week. A conversational and collaborative dialogue emerges, where I support you in slowing down and exploring the actual words, thoughts, and feelings that are coming up for you.

This kind of supported introspection can help you develop a mindful awareness that can soften habitual, reactive responses to yourself, others, and the world around you.

Who This is For

Who reaches out for General Therapy?

You’ve got a lot on your mind and nowhere to put it

General Therapy can simply be a place where you experience a conversation where you verbalize what’s been bouncing around your mind and engage in a collaborative and active dialogue about you.

You see psychotherapy as mental and emotional hygiene

People often come to build a habit of mental and emotional hygiene. This doesn’t mean learning how to live a perfect life or avoiding feelings altogether. It means growing in your capacity to face life’s challenges in a way that aligns with your values.

You want a separate space to explore your life

Sometimes we need someone who isn’t connected to our lives, but is still open to your vulnerability, your challenges, and your doubts. Therapy can be that space where conversations you might not want to have with others can take shape.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

General Therapy is therapy for people who simply want a space to talk and develop a practice of communicating their emotions and thoughts openly with a psychotherapist to gain insight, to unburden their minds, to learn emotional regulation skills, and to simply have a supportive space that is completely theirs

What is General Therapy?

No. Therapy is for anyone and everyone who wants a space to explore themselves. This can often look like talking about their relationships, career, childhood, future hopes and dreams, guilt and shame, and everything in between.

Do I need a specific problem to start therapy?

The difference is in the starting point. In reality, people who come in for general therapy usually end up talking about things like anxiety, depression, or grief, even if that’s not why they initially started therapy for those topics and experiences.

How is this different from therapy for anxiety, grief, or relationships?

It depends on the individual. Some people find having a therapist to come to over a long period of time to be helpful. Others might feel like they simply need 3-6 sessions. It all depends on your needs and what you want from therapy.

How long do people stay in this kind of therapy?
