Meaning and Identity

How do you make sense of your self and the world? How do you experiencing belonging? Questions like this can keep you up at night—they are meaningful, and they drive us towards understanding ourselves and others more deeply. Questions of meaning and identity can stem from (but not limited to) cultural, socioeconomic, spiritual, and sexual identity.

What This Looks Like

What sessions feel like

I typically start by helping you explore your values. Are you living by your values, or someone else’s? Where did your values come from? How do they shape your sense of meaning and identity?

You might already know where to start. You might feel the tug and pull between different identities (common for people from multiple spiritual, cultural, social backgrounds), or you might feel like the way you’ve lived your life has ceased to provide you with the sense of vitality and joy they expected.

Who This is For

Why talk about Meaning and Identity?

Your values aren’t working for you anymore

Naturally, we inherit values from others—family, spiritual tradition, our ethnic and cultural backgrounds. And there is nothing wrong with that. But sometimes, we notice these values aren’t working for us anymore. We need to update these values, or update them entirely.

You want to deeply understand your sense of meaning and identity

Nothing has to be wrong or troublesome for you to explore your meaning and identity. Rather than wait for life to force the question, you might feel drawn to intentionally reflect on your purpose and self-image.

You want to develop a sense of direction and not just live life through reaction

Life doesn’t always offer us a clear sense of purpose, even in those moments where we think it should. Talking about meaning and identity can make us reconnect with our innate capacity to direct our lives, to respond consciously to what is happening within us and around us.

It offers you space to figure out what’s really yours. Who are you, and who do you want to be? For some, these sessions offer clarity. For others, it is a space to engage in a collaborative conversation to deepen into there sense of self—and perhaps, along the way, come to ask more meaningful questions about themselves.

What does talking about meaning and identity in therapy offer me?

No. Therapy is for anyone and everyone who wants a space to explore themselves. This can often look like talking about their relationships, career, childhood, future hopes and dreams, guilt and shame, and everything in between.

Do I need a specific problem to start therapy?

The difference is in the starting point. Individuals who want to talk about meaning and identity might also reflect on and share their experiences with anxiety, depression, or grief, even if that’s not why they initially started therapy for those topics and experiences.

How is this different from therapy for anxiety, grief, or relationships?

It depends on the individual. Some people find having a therapist to come to over a long period of time to be helpful. Others might feel like they simply need 3-6 sessions. It all depends on your needs and what you want from therapy.

How long do people stay in this kind of therapy?
